Mormon Elder Oliver Cowdery gained an piquant reputation as one of the three primary witnesses asserting a divine origin for the Book of Mormon. He was an important leader among the early Latter Day Saints.

Oliver is less recognized for being a son, a husband and a father. This web-page presents a summary view of Oliver's place within the Cowdery lineage, and within the families of his Father, William Cowdery, Jr. (1765-1847) and of his paternal Grandfather, William Cowdery, Sr. (1737-1831). The following Nine Generation Report reaches all the way back to Oliver's g-g-g-g-Grandfather, William Cowdery (1602-1687).

  Generation No. 1

1.WILLIAM1 COWDERY was born 1602 in Weymouth, ENG, and died November 10, 1687 in Reading, Middlesex, MA. He married JOANNA LISCENCE 1638 in Lynn, Essex, MA.

William Cowdrey/Cowdery (1602-1687) was the ancestor of all the other Cowderies whose names are listed below. Although he was not the only Cowdery to arrive in America in colonial days his descendants appear to outnumber all the other American Cowdery family members combined. According to Stanley R. Gunn, William was "a direct descendant of the family of Lord Cowdery whose family resided in South Downs, England, for many generations, and whose ancestors were known to be the owners of Cowdery Castle located at Midhurst, even at such an early date as 1304." Patrick Hanks, in his Dictionary of Surnames, says that "Cowdrey" is a Norman French "habitation name" occurring in France and Sussex. The word is derived from coudre -- meaning "a grove of hazelnut trees."

William was born in 1602 in Weymouth, on the Dorset coast of England. Presumably his father was a certain George Cowdrey of Dorset. Whatever his family background may have been, William sailed from Southampton to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. He was most likely a Puritan and when he arrived in America he found a ready welcome among the Pilgrim Colonists of the Plymouth region -- who were by then finally getting their little colony firmly established on the Massachusetts coast. William settled in Lynn (Essex Co.) and there married Joanna Liscence/License in 1638. She died 6 May 1666 and was the mother of his four children. He married again a year or two later; this time to a lady named Alse/Alice. They appear to have had no children.

In 1644 the township of Reading (Middlesex Co.) was founded a few miles northwest of Essex. Either William moved there or the change in boundary lines caused his farm to be located in the new town. Some sources say that William and Joanna had a fourth child, Hannah, who was born in Reading. Other sources show Hannah as being a nickname for their third child, Bethia. Of the couple's three or four children, only Nathaniel (1639-1690) provided them with Cowdery offspring.

The Children of WILLIAM COWDERY and JOANNA LISCENCE were:
  • 2 i. NATHANIEL SR.2 COWDERY, b. 1639, Reading, Middlesex, MA; d. June 16, 1690, Lynn, Essex, MA.

  • Generation No. 2

    2. NATHANIEL SR.2 COWDERY (WILLIAM1) was born 1639 in Reading, Middlesex, MA, and died June 16, 1690 in Reading, Middlesex, MA. He married (1) ELIZABETH CARTER November 22, 1654 in Reading, Middlesex, MA. He married (2) MARY BACHELDER November 22, 1660 in Reading, Middlesex, MA, daughter of JOHN BATCHELDER and REBECCA (or MARY?) UNKNOWN.

Nathaniel Cowdrey, Sr. (1639-1690) was the first son of William Cowdrey, the Puritan emigrant from Weymouth, England, and Joanna Liscense. The parents moved to the newly organized town of Reading c. 1644 when Nathaniel was about six years old, and Nathaniel lived there until his death. The name "Nathaniel" was a very common one among the early American Cowdery familes and particular care must be taken so as not to confuse all these relatives having the same name one with another.

Nathaniel, Sr. first married on 22 Nov 1654 to Elizabeth Carter, and they had two children. She died on 9 Oct 1659 and he remarried the following year with Mary Bachelder/Batchelder. She bore Nathaniel seven children and outlived him by 39 years, dying in 1729. The first of those seven children, Samuel (1657-1742), became the g-g-Grandfather of Oliver Cowdery.

The children of NATHANIEL COWDERY and ELIZABETH CARTER were:
  • 3 i. SAMUEL SR.3 COWDERY, b. May 16, 1657, Reading, Middlesex, MA; d. November 17, 1742, Chelmsford, Middlesex, MA.

  • ii. ELIZABETH COWDERY, b. August 13, 1659, Reading, Middlesex, MA; d. October 20, 1659, Reading, Middlesex, MA.

  • The children of NATHANIEL COWDERY and MARY BACHELDER were:
  • 4 iii NATHANIEL JR.3 COWDERY, b. August 18, 1661, Reading, Middlesex, MA; d. Aft. 1689.

  • iv. REBECCA COWDERY, b. October 25, 1663, Reading, Middlesex, MA; m. GEORGE TOWNSEND, February 27, 1687/88.

  • v. WILLIAM COWDERY, b. March 13, 1665/66, Reading, Middlesex, MA.

  • viii. SUSANNA COWDERY, b. May 01, 1676, Reading, Middlesex, MA.
  • ix. MATHIAS COWDERY, b. April 11, 1679, Reading, Middlesex, MA; m. SARAH UNKNOWN, Abt. 1700.

    Generation No. 3

    3. SAMUEL SR.3 COWDERY (NATHANIEL SR.2, WILLIAM1) was born May 16, 1657 in Reading, Middlesex, MA, and died November 17, 1742 in Chelmsford, Middlesex, MA. He married ELIZABETH PARKER April 28, 1685 in Reading, Middlesex, MA, daughter of HANANIAH PARKER and ELIZABETH BROWN.

Both Samuel Sr. (1657-1742) and his brother Nathaniel Jr. (1661-c. 1690?) are listed in most sources as having married ladies named Elizabeth/Elisabeth Parker. It is unknown whether or not this was the same woman. If she was a wife to both brothers, then one of their marriage dates as given below must be incorrect. Also, both brothers are shown as having a daughter Mary who died in 1670. One of these dates must be wrong. The problem does not affect the lineage of Oliver Cowdery, however. Between the two brothers, only Samuel's son Nathaniel (1691-1751) had Cowdery progeny. He became Oliver's Great Grandfather.

The children of SAMUEL COWDERY and ELIZABETH PARKER were:
  • i. RUTH4 COWDERY, b. June 11, 1687, Reading, Middlesex, MA; d. ?

  • ii. MARY COWDERY, b. April 01, 1689, Reading, Middlesex, MA; d. May 04, 1760, Chelmsford, Middlesex, MA.

  • 5 iii. NATHANIEL SR. COWDERY, b. November 16, 1691, Reading, Essex, MA; d. April 23, 1751, Hadley, Hampshire, MA.

  • iv. MARTHA COWDERY, b. 1693, Reading, Middlesex, MA; d. ?
  • v. SAMUEL JR. COWDERY, b. 1695, Reading, Middlesex, MA; d. aft. 1728. He married (1) Alice Mean Nov. 19, 1718 and (2) Sarah Nicholson. He had at least 6 children.

  •
    4. NATHANIEL JR.3 COWDERY (NATHANIEL SR.2, WILLIAM1) was born August 18, 1661 in Reading, Middlesex, MA, and died Aft. 1689. He married ELISABETH PARKER April 28, 1685 in Reading, Middlesex, MA.

The child of NATHANIEL COWDERY and ELISABETH PARKER probably was:
  • i. MARY4 COWDERY, b. 1689, Reading, Middlesex, MA; d. May 04, 1760?, Reading, Middlesex, MA.

  •

    Generation No. 4

    5. NATHANIEL SR.4 COWDERY (SAMUEL SR.3, NATHANIEL SR.2, WILLIAM1) was born November 16, 1691 in Reading, Essex, MA, and died April 23, 1751 in Hadley, Hampshire, MA. He married MEHITABEL DAMON September 16, 1718 in Charlestown, Middlesex, MA, daughter of THOMAS DAMON and LUCY EMERSON.

The complexities of Oliver Cowdry's kinship begin in charting the offspring of his Great Grandfather Nathaniel Sr. Cowdery (1691-1751). Nathaniel had four sons who lived to produce Cowdery offspring (through a total of six different wives). Practically every Cowdery whom Oliver might have likely encountered during his lifetime were the children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren of these four men and six women. A fifth brother, Nathaniel (1719-1756) married Mary Gates, a cousin of Lydia Gates, the mother of Lucy Mack Smith. There is no record of this couple having children.

Between about 1732 and 1737 Nathaniel and Mehitable emigrated to the wilds of East Haddam, Middlesex, CT. The couple were early pioneers along the Connecticut River but they gave up their homesteading efforts there following some troubles with the Indians. They returned home to Massachusetts by about 1738-41 (when their last two children were born, both apparently in MA). Some of Nathaniel's family eventually returned to East Haddam to live, after the area had become more civilized. His wife outlived him by eight years and she died in East Haddam in 1699. According to Stanley R. Gunn, their son William (1737-1831) and his family "moved from Massachusetts to Reading, Vermont where they purchased a thirty acre farm" in June 1786. After having spent their first hundred years in the Bay Colony, the Cowdery families were finally moving out to explore new frontiers.

The children of NATHANIEL COWDERY and MEHITABEL DAMON were:
  • i. NATHANIEL JR.5 COWDERY, b. June 1719, Charlestown, Middlesex, MA; d. December 07, 1768, E. Haddam, Middlesex, CT; m. MARY GATES, May 27, 1756, <E. Haddam, Middlesex, CT>.

    Generation No. 5

    6. MOSES SR.5 COWDERY (NATHANIEL SR.4, SAMUEL SR.3, NATHANIEL SR.2, WILLIAM1) was born November 01, 1731 in Reading, Middlesex, MA, and died December 17, 1813 in W. Hartland, Hartford, CT. He married MARTHA BUSHNELL Abt. 1755 in <, Middlesex, CT>.

Shortly after the birth of their first child in 1758, Moses Sr. Cowdery (1731-1813) and his wife Martha moved far up a tributary of the Connecticut River, almost to the MA border. Here, in Hartland twp. They were the first of many Cowderies who still inhabit the region.
The children of MOSES COWDERY and MARTHA BUSHNELL were:
  • 10 i. ASA SR.6 COWDERY, b. February 19, 1758, E. Haddam, Middlesex, CT; d. Aft. 1807.

  •

    7. WILLIAM SR.5 COWDERY (NATHANIEL SR.4, SAMUEL SR.3, NATHANIEL SR.2, WILLIAM1) was born September 05, 1737 in E. Haddam, Middlesex, CT, and died 1831 in Woodstock, Windsor, VT. He married (1) HANNAH EMMONS September 18, 1760 in Millington, Middlesex, CT, daughter of SAMUEL Sr. EMMONS and RUTH CONE. Hannah died in 1769, probably in E. Haddam, Middlesex, CT. William married (2) PRUDENCE BECKET Abt. 1771 in <, , probably in MA.
As mentioned above, in June 1786 William Sr. Cowdery (1737-1831) and his family moved from Massachusetts to Reading, Windsor, Vermont (see area map) where they purchased a thirty acre farm. Hannah Emmons Cowdery (Oliver's Grandmother) died in 1769, so her children were raised by William's second wife, Prudence.

William and his family arrived in Reading during the period when it was part of the independent republic of New Conneticut (1777-1791). Five years after their arrival Vermont joined the newly forming union and William's family became citizens of the United States of America. William was a founding member and a lay preacher in Congregational Church of Reading. William's first son, William Jr. (1765-1847), spent most of his first 55 years in Vermont, so it is likely that his son Oliver knew his Grandfather William Sr. and step-Grandmother Prudence well. William likely named his son Oliver after a younger sister, Olive Cowdery, (who perhaps died as a child).

The children of WILLIAM COWDERY and HANNAH EMMONS were:
  • i. DOROTHY6 COWDERY, b. 1763, East Haddam, Middlesex, CT; m. JONATHAN TINKER, Abt. 1783, <, , CT>.

  • ii. HANNAH COWDERY, b. 1763, East Haddam, Middlesex, CT; m. WILLIAM SABIN, February 23, 1786, E. Haddam, Middlesex, CT.

  •

    8. JACOB M. SR.5 COWDERY (NATHANIEL SR.4, SAMUEL SR.3, NATHANIEL SR.2, WILLIAM1) was born 1721? in <, , MA>, and died April 11, 1820 in Tunbridge, Orange, VT. He married (1) MARY ANNA BECKWITH December 18, 1755 in E. Haddam, Middlesex, CT; he also joined with (2) LUTICO CROSSMAN Abt. 1796, prob. in NY.

Jacob M. Sr. Cowdery (c. 1743-1820) grew up in East Haddam, CT. He was a doctor (as was his brother Jabez). Jacob was also a Major in the Revolutionary War. He joined the Hartland Congregational Church on 7 Nov 1774 and his wife joined on 6 Sept 1778. They were both dismissed on 17 Dec 1785 (perhaps in preparation for a move to Vermont). If Jacob's commonly given birth and death dates were correct, he would have lived to be almost 100 years old; however, it is very likely that he was born in 1743 and not in 1721.

Jacob joined with (married?) Lutico Crossman, probably prior to 1796, and by June 1796 (when he recorded a deed there) they were in Canandaigua, Ontario, NY. Jacob's wife Mary remained behind in New York. The issue of Jacob and Lutico was John Cowdery, b. 1 June 1799 in Canandaigua. Jacob's transient residence in Ontario, NY may have been connected with his cousin William's temporary relocation to the same area. William Cowdery, Jr. (1865-1847) is listed as living the in the extreme northwest of Ontario Co. in the 1810 Census. William's daughter Rebecca Marie was born in Williamstown, Ontario, NY on December 10, 1810. Soon after this William returned to Rutland Co., VT.

Jacob and Lutico apparently moved to Tunbridge, Orange Co., VT, (c. 1805?) but their son John either remained behind or returned to Ontario at an early date. He is perhaps the John Cowdery recorded living at Freeport, Ontario, NY in the 1820 Census and at Geneseo, Livingston, NY in the 1830 Census. John married Christina Peters (b. 1802) on 20 Sep 1817 in Rush, Genesee (later Monroe), NY. The couple moved to Lodi (later S. Gowanda) in about 1826, where John is thought to have been connected with the Lodi Pioneer, later called the Cattaraugus Freeman. There is a "John Codry" in the 1850 Census of Cattaraugus -- living at Leon (a few miles south of Lodi), but "John Coodery" is shown in the 1840, 50, & 60 Census reports as living in Collins, Erie, NY (adjacent to Lodi, on the north). John died 18 Dec 1866 in Gowanda, and is presumed to be buried in Collins. Christina died in the same place 27 Nov 1885. John's children are listed beow, along with their probable places of birth.

    01. Samantha -- b: 18 Nov 1818; Rush, Genesee, NY
    02. Sarah Ann -- b: 10 Jan 1821; Rush, Genesee, NY

Area Maps: Vermont 1795   Rutland & Windsor counties

    13. WILLIAM JR.6 COWDERY (WILLIAM SR.5, NATHANIEL SR.4, SAMUEL SR.3, NATHANIEL SR.2, WILLIAM1) was born September 05, 1765 in East Haddam, Middlesex, CT, and died February 26, 1847 in Kirtland, Lake, OH. William married (1) REBECCA FULLER Abt. 1787 in <, , VT or CT>, daughter of WILLIAM FULLER (1729-1768) and REBECCA SPENCER (1737-1780). William Fuller's parents were John Fuller and Mary Cornwall. Rebecca Spencer's parents were Micajah Spencer and Sarah Booge. William married (2) KEZIAH PEARCE (AUSTIN) 1810 in Poultney, Rutland, VT, the daughter of PHINEAS SR. PEARCE and RUTH GAINES. Phineas' parents were Amos Pearce and Mary Spalding (1705-1768, of Plainfield, Windham, CT). Keziah had previously married a Mr. Austin and had a son by him, Silas Austin, b. c. 1806, probably in Rutland Co., VT.

William Cowdery, Jr. (1765-1847) was born on September 5, 1765 in the village of East Haddam, Middlesex County, in the British Colony of Connecticut. He married Rebecca Fuller (1768-1809) in about 1787. Rebecca's Grandfather was John Fuller (c. 1656-1726) and John Fuller's brother was Shubael Fuller (c. 1684-1748). Shubael's Granddaughter, in turn, was Lydia Gates (1732-1818), mother of Lucy Mack Smith. In other words, Rebecca Fuller and Lydia Gates were full cousins, both born in East Haddam. The two Granddaughters no doubt knew each other and their respective children, Oliver Cowdery and Lucy Mack Smith, almost certainly knew of each other prior to their supposed initial meeting in Manchester, Ontario, NY in the fall of 1828.

Some sources say that the William Jr. Cowdery and Josesph Smith Sr. knew each other as members of a "fraternity of Vermont rodsmen" as early as 1800. William Jr. probably married Rebecca Fuller in East Haddam in 1786 or 1787. The couple were in Wells, Rutland, VT by 31 Aug 1788 when their first child (Warren) was born. Lucy Mack moved to Tunbridge, Orange, VT in about 1789, shortly after the death of her sister Lovina. There she met Joseph Smith Sr. and they were married 24 Jan 1796 in Tunbridge. Between 1796 and 1816 William Sr. and Prudence Cowdery were living within 20 miles of their relatives Joseph Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith. William's brother, Dr. Jabez Cowdery, lived in Tunbridge within walking distance of the Smith family. There is no proof showing that Joseph Smith Sr. ever visited William Cowdery Jr.'s family in neighboring Rutland Co., but William Jr. certainly visited his father (and perhaps his Uncle Jabez) who lived much closer to the Smiths -- (see enlargement map).

William Jr.'s family lived in Wells, Rutland, VT from about 1787 until shortly after the death of Rebecca Fuller Cowdery on 3 Sep 1809. Early in 1810 William married Keziah Pearce, who had recently become a widow following the death of her first husband (a Mr. Austin, possibly Samuel Austin). Their son, Silas Austin, was probably born about 1808 -- in 1836 he was living in Franklin Co., OH near Columbus. William and Keziah moved to Williamson, Ontario (after 1823 Wayne) Co., NY, perhaps leaving some of William's younger children and Keziah's son, Silas Austin, in the care of relatives in VT. Keziah's first Cowdery child, Rebecca Marie, was born in Williamson on 10 Dec. 1810 and William was recorded in Ontario Census earlier that same year. Perhaps his sojourn to NY was made in connection to his cousin Jacob M. Cowdery's temporary relocation in Canandaigua, Ontario, NY.

William Jr. and Keziah returned to Rutland Co., VT prior to 3 Jun 1814 when their second daughter Lucy Pearce Cowdery was born in Poultney. Their third daughter, Phebe L. Cowdery was born in Middleton, Rutland Co. in 1817 and in August of 1818 they had all three daughters baptized at what would later be Ethan Smith's Congregational church in Poultney. In 1820 William was recorded as living in Poultney in the Rutland Census. Not too long after that he and Keziah they moved their family back to Ontario Co., NY, probably to Arcadia, where William's son Lyman Cowdery was living. In 1823 Wayne Co. was created and thereafter William Jr. Cowdery, his son Lyman, and other family members resided in Arcadia, Wayne, NY, the township immediately east of Palmyra.

If William Jr. was an early acquaintance of Joseph Smith, Sr. in VT, there is no record of his renewing their friendship after he and Keziah moved to the Palmyra area. Their son Lyman had dealings in neighboring Palmyra at least as early as 1825, however, and he apparently knew who the Smiths were at least by the fall of 1828 when he got his brother Oliver a schoolmaster's job in Manchester, Ontario Co. William is not known to have taken any interest in his son's activities in the founding of Mormonism, nor did he join the LDS Church until about 1835. At that time he moved to Kirtland and remained there until his death in 1847. His wife Keziah remained behind and resided in Ellery, Chautauqa, NY until her death in 1861.

After the excommunication of his sons, Oliver and Warren, from the LDS Church in 1838, William Jr. appears to have joined with the dissident Mormons at Kirtland and eventually supported the leadership claims of James J. Strang.

    27. WARREN A.7 COWDERY (WILLIAM JR.6, WILLIAM SR.5, NATHANIEL SR, NATHANIEL SR.4, SAMUEL SR.3, NATHANIEL SR.2, WILLIAM1) was born October 17, 1788 in Wells, Rutland, VT, and died February 23, 1851 in Kirtland, Lake, OH. He married PATIENCE SIMMONDS September 22, 1814 in Pawlet, Rutland, VT.

Warren A. Cowdery (1788-1851) was a doctor, druggist, minister, and farmer. After marrying Patience Simmonds, he moved to Freedom twp., Cattaraugus Co., NY, about 35 miles southeast of Buffalo. Warren practiced medicine in VT, NY, OH and MO -- though he was perhaps more of a "root doctor" (like his brother-in-law Hiram Page) than he was a licensed physician.

Warren and Patience moved to Freedom in 1815 and he became the local Postmaster in 1824. Warren received pre-publication proof sheets of the Book of Mormon, sent to him from Palmyra by his brother Oliver. Although he apparently baptized late in 1831, it wasn't until after a visit of Joseph Smith in 1834 that Warren became an active Mormon. Even then he did not "gather" to OH or MO as most converts of the period did. He was appointed president of the LDS congregation at Freedom and remained there until finally moving his family to Kirtland, Ohio in Feb. 1836. There he became a clerk and scribe for Joseph Smith. He also managed the printing office and book bindery.

Warren took over the editorship of the "Messenger and Advocate" in Kirtland between Mar. and Sep. 1837, at a time when he, Oliver, and their friends and relatives were becoming increasingly disaffected with the leadership of Joseph Smith. Warren was excommunicated from the LDS Church in 1838, but he maintained enough interest in the movement to visit Joseph Smith at Liberty jail and to join with the dissident Mormons in Kirtland. He remained in Kirtland until his death in 1851.

His wife Patience eventually moved to Erie County where she appears to have taken up residence with her son Marcellus at Sandusky. She died there on May 14, 1862. Patience Simmonds Cowdery kept a diary (which is now held by the LDS Historian's Office, copy at BYU's Lee Library)

The children of WARREN COWDERY and PATIENCE SIMMONDS were:
  • 44 i. MARCELLUS F.8 COWDERY, b. August 31, 1815, Pawlet, Rutland, VT; d. September 26, 1885, Sandusky, Erie, OH.

    28. STEPHEN FULLER7 COWDERY (WILLIAM JR.6, WILLIAM SR.5, NATHANIEL SR.4, SAMUEL SR.3, NATHANIEL SR.2, WILLIAM1) was born February 16, 1791 in Wells, Rutland, VT, and died May 02, 1848 in Kirtland, Lake, OH. He married BETSEY BRADSHAW Abt. 1816 in <, , VT>.

Stephen Fuller Cowdery (1791-1848) was one of Oliver's lesser known siblings. He apparently migrated from VT to western NY in about 1820, or perhaps even earlier. As his name does not appear in the NY Census reports, he probably lived with either his Father and brother Lyman in Ontario Co. or with his brother Warren in Cattauragus Co. The "Suthen F. Cowdery" whose name appears in the 1830 NY Census for Rochester is very likely Stephen F. If so, perhaps his children were born in Monroe Co., NY. By the early 1830s Stephen had moved his family to Buffalo. From there he likely moved to live with his brother Warren in Kirtland in the mid-1830s. He died there in 1848. Some accounts show his wife Betsey as dying on the same day. If this is true, perhaps they died together in an accident.

The children of STEPHEN COWDERY and BETSEY BRADSHAW were:
  • i. WILLIAM8 COWDERY, b. Abt. 1824.

  • ii. ELIZABETH COWDERY, b. Abt. 1826.

    29. SALLY7 COWDERY (WILLIAM JR.6, WILLIAM SR.5, NATHANIEL SR.4, SAMUEL SR.3, NATHANIEL SR.2, WILLIAM1) was born June 30, 1799 in Wells, Rutland, VT, and died April 18, 1844. She married ENOCH HOWLETT January 01, 1832 in Freedom, Cattaraugus, NY.

The children of SALLY COWDERY and ENOCH HOWLETT were:

  • iii. MARTHA M. HOWLETT, b. June 27, 1836, Freedom, Cattaraugus, NY.

    30. LYMAN <W.>7 COWDERY (WILLIAM JR.6, WILLIAM SR.5, NATHANIEL SR.4, SAMUEL SR.3, NATHANIEL SR.2, WILLIAM1) was born March 12, 1802 in Wells, Rutland, VT, and died April 22, 1881 in Elkhorn, Walworth, WI. He married ELIZA ALEXANDER April 20, 1825 in Arcadia, Wayne, NY.

Lyman (Lyman W.?) Cowdery (1802-1881) grew up in VT but moved to Wayne Co., NY at a young age -- perhaps as early as 1815-1818. According to Dan Vogel, Lyman began his legal career after marrying Eliza Alexander in 1825. Two old neighbors who knew Lyman during his NY days both described him as a "pettifogger, " a shyster who "was not a regular lawyer, but took small cases and practiced before justices of the peace." Lyman was further described as "loose Cowdery," a man whose only religion was freemasonry. Although Lyman may have begun work in his profession at this low level he rose to become a reputable attorney. He became a probate judge in Ontario Co., NY and served in the state legislature. Presumably Lyman moved his family from Arcadia, Wayne Co. to Manchester, Ontario Co. in about 1834. He is listed in the 1830 NY Census as living in Arcadia; ten years later the OH Census shows him residing in Kirtland near his elder brother Warren. No doubt the brothers' Father and step-Mother, William Jr. and Keziah also lived with them. Lyman is listed as being a Mormon is Susan E. Black's Membership of the Church... 1830-1848, but she provides no date for his supposed baptism.

William Cowdery remained a Mormon (though not a follower of Brigham Young) and he and his sons, Warren and Lyman, all maintained contacts with dissident Latter Day Saints living in Kirtland. By 1846 many of the Saints still living in Kirtland had begun to favor the cause of James J. Strang, who was then building a new Mormon gathering place in Voree, Walworth Co., WI. William Cowdery Jr. was among those who were inclined to follow Strang, but he died in 1847 before making any decision to move to Voree. His son Lyman did move to Walworth Co., however. Although not a Strangite himself, Lyman probably moved to the Voree area in association with some of Strang's followers who left Kirtland c. 1845-46. Lyman relocated his family in Elkhorn, the county seat of Walworth, and there continued his career as a lawyer and dabbler in politics.

After the death of his Father, Oliver followed Lyman to Elkhorn and joined him in his law practice there. Oliver also became the co-editor of the Walworth County Democrat for a few months. Oliver left Elkhorn in the fall of 1848 but Lyman remained, dying there in 1881.

The children of LYMAN COWDERY and ELIZA ALEXANDER were:
  • i. HELEN MAR8 COWDERY, b. January 10, 1827, Arcadia, Wayne, NY.

  • ii. SOPHIA AMANDA COWDERY, b. September 21, 1831, <Arcadia, Wayne, NY>; d. <Elkhorn, Walworth, WI>.

  • 47 iii. DYAR LAMOTTE COWDERY, b. January 05, 1833, Arcadia, Wayne, NY.

  • iv. LYMAN EMMETT COWDERY, b. February 18, 1836, Manchester, Ontario, NY.

Cowdery, Oliver (1806-1850), teacher, lawyer, newspaper editor, was born at Wells, Rutland County, Vermont. He assisted Joseph Smith as a scribe during translation of the Book of Mormon and with other church writings. Witness to early events connected with the foundation of Mormonism. One of the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon, and a participant in the priesthood restoration. Married Elizabeth Ann Whitmer, 1832. Member of the Kirtland high council. Appointed assistant president of the Church in 1834. He left the Church in 1838 but returned ten years later. Practiced law in Ohio and Wisconsin. Died at Richmond, Ray County, Missouri.
